Overview

Yu. A. Gagarin Amusement Park, also known as Gagarin Park or the new park, is an operating amusement park in Molchegorsk's New Town.

Construction began in 2004, and the park opened in 2007. It was created as a modern replacement for S. M. Kirov Central Park of Culture and Recreation, which had closed after the 1996 disaster.

Gagarin Park has a pronounced space-themed design. Its grounds combine outdoor rides, an indoor entertainment complex, a concert venue, and children's and walking areas. One of its main attractions is the Horizon Ferris wheel.

Kirov Park was neither restored nor demolished, so Molchegorsk now has two wheels: one operating in the New Town and one standing motionless over the abandoned grounds in the Old Town.

Layout

The park covers approximately 20–22 hectares. Its oval grounds are surrounded by a modern metal fence. The layout is organized around a central pedestrian axis and a ring avenue connecting the main themed areas.

Main entrance

The entrance complex is a broad structure of glass, metal, and pale concrete panels. The park's name and an image of an orbit appear above the gates.

The complex contains ticket booths, turnstiles, a screening point, information center, security room, first-aid station, lost-and-found office, lockers, souvenir shop, and administration building.

Lenin Avenue

Lenin Avenue begins beyond the main gates. This broad central promenade leads toward Orbit Square and the Ferris wheel. Lampposts, navigation boards, benches, retail pavilions, and entrances to the main public areas line the avenue.

The park's main utility gallery runs beneath Lenin Avenue.

Orbit Square

Lenin Avenue ends at Orbit Square. A monument to Yu. A. Gagarin stands at its center, surrounded by a low circular fountain.

The square contains a stage for city celebrations, an information display, cafés, the central shop, the entrance to the Space indoor complex, and the approach to the Ferris wheel. Part of the square is used as an ice rink in winter.

Horizon Ferris wheel

The Horizon Ferris wheel is approximately 50 meters high and has enclosed cabins and an illumination system. Its highest point overlooks the New Town, the rivers, the surrounding ridges, and Molchegorsk's older districts.

The wheel complex includes an open entrance plaza, covered queue, boarding station, operator's booth, electrical switch room, emergency control room, equipment store, and staff room. A technical chamber lies beneath the boarding platform.

Rides

Thrill rides area

The thrill rides area occupies the far side of the park, away from the children's and walking areas. It contains:

The Vostok roller coaster includes a boarding station, control room, train-blocking room, maintenance track, and a system of technical stairs along the course. Service roads pass beneath sections of the track.

The Zenith tower has a separate machinery room and an internal maintenance staircase.

Family area

The family area contains:

Signal occupies a large windowless building. Decorated corridors, technical passages, operator rooms, and concealed sections of track run through its interior. The ride depicts an expedition receiving an unknown signal from space; it has no established connection to anomalies.

Star Town children's area

A decorative fence separates the children's area, which has several exits. It contains a small carousel, a rocket ride, children's cars, a small wheel, a playground shaped like a space station, a children's railway, a covered pavilion, parent-and-child rooms, and a small theater.

The railway runs around the entire area and enters a covered station. A repair shed with a spare train and inspection pit stands behind the station.

Space indoor complex

The two-story Space entertainment complex allows part of the park to operate during the colder months.

The ground floor contains a lobby, amusement arcade, cafés and food court, souvenir shops, cloakroom, sanitary and service rooms, and an exit to Orbit Square.

The upper floor contains a planetarium, small cinema, exhibition gallery, event rooms, and a technical area above the gaming halls.

A shared technical basement beneath the building contains ventilation chambers, a server room, warehouse, refrigerated rooms serving the cafés, and the central control unit.

Concert and walking area

An open-air stage with audience seating stands in the eastern part of the park. Dressing rooms, an equipment store, control room, and loading yard lie behind it.

The walking area includes broad paths, small gardens, pavilions, cafés, seating areas, decorative fountains, and sites for temporary fairs. It connects Orbit Square to the eastern exit and provides a route around the main rides.

Service grounds

The service complex occupies the northern boundary, hidden from the main visitor routes. A ring service road follows the outer edge of the park and provides access to the rear of every ride.

Warehouses

The main technical warehouse stores motors, gearboxes, cables, cabin components, and ride spare parts. The seasonal warehouse holds temporary pavilions, decorations, outdoor furniture, and winter equipment for Orbit Square.

The prizes and souvenirs warehouse is connected to the goods-receiving area and central shop by a dedicated service route.

Repair hangar

The repair hangar includes a tall work hall, several workshops, inspection pits, lifting equipment, and locked tool rooms. Vehicles can leave the hangar directly onto the ring service road.

Central substation

The substation supplies the rides, lighting, loudspeakers, and public buildings. Backup generators stand nearby. The substation's lower level connects to the main utility gallery.

Underground facilities

Most of the underground facilities appear on the park's official plans. The system includes:

The main utility gallery connects the substation, the basement of the Space complex, and Orbit Square. It is high enough for staff to walk through and move small equipment.

Cable branches lead from the gallery to the major rides, with a separate branch continuing toward the Ferris wheel.

Ferris wheel technical chamber

The branch from the main gallery ends in a chamber beneath Horizon's boarding platform. It contains power cabinets, backup controls, emergency-stop equipment, and communication systems linked to the operator's booth.

Pumping station and drainage

The pumping station removes groundwater and rainwater from the lower rooms. A rectangular concrete drainage gallery running beneath part of the park connects to it.

Connection to the municipal sewer

In 2005, while the underground utilities were under construction, the contractor made an error in the survey alignment. The design called for the park's drainage system to connect to a separate stormwater collector, but the work relied on an outdated plan of the municipal networks.

As a result, the drainage gallery was driven into an old municipal sewer main. The error was discovered after its side wall had been breached. To avoid stopping construction, the opening was sealed with a concrete partition. The final documentation identified the section as a drainage dead end and omitted the breached sewer main from the operating plans.

The partition later cracked under constant damp, groundwater pressure, and seasonal ground movement. Part of the concrete collapsed and reopened the passage into the municipal sewer.

The actual route is: municipal sewer → old trunk collector → damaged concrete partition → park drainage gallery → pumping station → utility gallery.

The old municipal collector is large enough for a person to pass through. A narrow maintenance ledge runs along one wall, with access shafts at intervals. The park drainage gallery has a smaller rectangular cross-section.

Remnants of reinforcement bars, broken concrete, a rusted grille, an old construction ladder, a closed water-meter cabinet, and faded contractor markings remain beside the damaged partition. A barred door on the park side has a lock destroyed by corrosion.

During heavy rain and the spring thaw, water from the municipal collector can flow back into the park's drainage system. This periodically floods the lower part of the pumping station and sections of the utility gallery, causing damp, corrosion, accumulation of sewer gases, infestations of rats, and false flood-alarm activations.

Officially, no connection to the municipal sewer exists. The plans show the drainage gallery ending at a blank wall. A small number of technical staff know of the passage and regard it as an old construction defect. No mystical origin for the connection has been established.

Operations

The outdoor rides operate primarily during the warmer months. The Space complex, some cafés, and shops remain open in winter, while part of Orbit Square becomes an ice rink. Ferris wheel operation depends on weather conditions.
