Overview
The New Municipal Cemetery, also known as the new cemetery, is Molchegorsk's primary operating burial site. It was created after the capacity of the Old Municipal Cemetery became limited.
Unlike the cramped and uneven old cemetery, the new complex has a regular layout, broad roads, and a clear division into functional zones. Most of the grounds are exposed to the wind. The trees are relatively young and do not yet form a dense canopy.
Location
The cemetery stands on the eastern and southeastern outskirts of the New Town, beyond the last residential blocks. It occupies a high, dry terrace between the bypass road and a forested mountain slope.
The site lies away from the marshy floodplain of the Grassy River and areas exposed to seasonal flooding.
A city road approaches the cemetery from the west. The southern side faces the bypass, while the eastern side faces the forest and mountain slope. Reserve land and sparse suburban development lie to the north.
The main spatial sequence runs as follows: New Town → approach road → entrance square → central avenue → memorial square → active sections → reserve grounds → forest.
General layout
The grounds form an elongated rectangle with a rounded eastern boundary that follows the foot of the mountain slope.
The cemetery is divided into four broad belts:
1. Public zone near the main entrance. 2. Main burial sections in the central area. 3. Service area by the bypass road. 4. Reserve grounds near the forest.
A tall metal fence on a concrete base surrounds the perimeter. It incorporates the main entrance, a service gate, and two emergency exits.
Main entrance
The main gate faces the New Town. A broad paved square lies in front of it.
The entrance zone includes:
- the main vehicle gate;
- two pedestrian gates;
- a security post;
- a city bus stop;
- a car park;
- a separate area for funeral vehicles;
- flower kiosks;
- a public restroom;
- an information board;
- electronic and printed maps of the sections.
The central avenue begins at the gate. Only funeral and service vehicles may drive along it.
Administrative and ceremonial complex
A two-story administrative and ceremonial building stands to the left of the main entrance. It consists of three connected parts: the office, the farewell hall, and the technical block.
Ground floor
The ground floor contains:
- a lobby;
- an information desk;
- a burial registration office;
- a waiting hall;
- a large farewell hall;
- a small ceremonial room;
- a ceremony preparation room;
- a room for attendants;
- restrooms;
- a service corridor;
- a separate exit to the funeral vehicle area.
The farewell hall has a main entrance from the square and a secured service entrance from the rear yard.
First floor
The first floor contains:
- the director's office;
- accounting;
- the archive;
- a dispatch room;
- a staff room;
- a security room;
- a server room;
- a small meeting room.
The archive holds cemetery plans, registration ledgers, and records of occupied and reserve plots.
Basement level
The basement contains:
- a heating unit;
- a ventilation chamber;
- an electrical switch room;
- a ceremonial equipment store;
- a cleaning supplies room;
- a technical corridor;
- the drainage pumping station.
A technical corridor runs from the basement beneath the rear yard and emerges in the cemetery's service area.
Central avenue and memorial square
Central avenue
The central avenue runs from the main gate almost to the reserve grounds. It serves as the cemetery's primary pedestrian and vehicle axis.
Lamps, benches, young spruce and rowan trees, standpipes, section signs, rest areas, waste collection areas, security cameras, and several side roads line the avenue.
Near the middle of the grounds, the avenue opens onto the memorial square and then continues toward the eastern sections.
Memorial square
The memorial square forms the compositional center of the cemetery. It has a strict rectangular shape and is separated from the burials by strips of lawn.
The square contains:
- a central monument;
- two walls bearing names;
- an area for municipal ceremonies;
- flagpoles;
- a ceremonial fire bowl;
- rows of benches;
- a secured technical chamber;
- stairs to the lower service platform.
Burial sections
Main sections
Straight roads divide most of the cemetery into rectangular sections. Each section has a number, its own sign, and several pedestrian entrances.
Inside are rows of individual graves, family plots, small rest areas, standpipes, waste containers, areas for temporary soil storage, and narrow service roads.
The main paths are paved. Internal passages between the rows are covered with gravel or concrete slabs.
The sections are filled in sequence: the oldest burials in the new cemetery lie closer to the entrance, while active plots gradually move toward the forest.
Avenue of honored burials
A separate broad avenue branches off from the memorial square. It ends at a semicircular area with flagpoles and a low wall.
The avenue contains larger plots and uniform monuments. A low stone curb separates it from the surrounding grounds, but it has no enclosed fence of its own.
Family section
Family plots lie on the cemetery's northern side, where the terrain rises slightly. They are larger than standard plots and are separated by low fences or hedges.
The section includes shared family monuments, small benches, space for later burials, separate access roads, drainage ditches, and retaining walls along the terrace boundaries.
There are no large underground crypts here. Only small burial chambers of standard construction are permitted.
Columbarium
The columbarium stands near the ceremonial building, allowing visitors to reach it without crossing the entire cemetery.
The complex includes:
- two long walls containing niches;
- a small inner courtyard;
- a covered gallery;
- a hall for short ceremonies;
- a service room;
- a room for temporary urn storage;
- a technical basement;
- a garden of remembrance.
A circular landscaped area occupies the center of the courtyard. Several passages connect the columbarium to the central avenue and car park.
Service area
The service yard stands in the southeastern part of the cemetery beside the bypass road. This allows service vehicles to enter the grounds without passing through the main gate.
The service area contains:
- a service gate;
- a security post;
- a garage;
- a machinery shelter;
- a repair workshop;
- a tool store;
- a store for fences and completed monuments;
- a staff room;
- changing rooms and showers;
- a fuel store;
- a technical-water tank;
- a soil storage area;
- an area for temporary storage of dismantled structures.
Two service roads leave the yard: one leads to the active sections, and the other to the reserve grounds.
Monument workshop
The workshop is a separate single-story building with a tall work hall.
It contains:
- a stoneworking area;
- a welding room;
- an engraving room;
- a slab store;
- a store for metal stock;
- a small office;
- a changing room;
- loading doors;
- an extraction chamber;
- a technical basement.
Behind the building is an open yard containing rows of unfinished monuments, slabs, curbs, and metal fences.
Reserve grounds
The eastern part of the cemetery is officially intended for future expansion. Most of it is currently occupied by sparse forest and cleared areas.
The reserve grounds contain:
- an unfinished extension of the central avenue;
- an unpaved service road;
- stakes marking future sections;
- drainage ditches;
- several construction wells;
- a temporary store of concrete slabs;
- geodetic reference markers.
The outer fence already encloses the reserve grounds. As a result, a large empty area closed to visitors remains inside the cemetery perimeter.
Drainage and underground facilities
The new cemetery was built on a high terrace, but water from the mountain slope crosses its grounds during rain and snowmelt. A branching drainage system protects the burials.
It includes:
- open ditches along the perimeter fence;
- underground pipes beneath the sections;
- catch basins;
- a central collector beneath the main avenue;
- a pumping station beneath the administrative building;
- a storage chamber near the service yard;
- a water outlet beyond the cemetery.
The central collector is intended for technical inspection. Enlarged chambers stand where it intersects the side lines.
The underground facilities do not form a single large complex. The connected technical route runs as follows: administrative building basement → pumping station → technical corridor → service yard → storage chamber → central drainage collector.
One of the side drainage tunnels in the reserve grounds was never completed. It ends at a concrete partition beneath a future section.
Connections between zones
The principal routes form four lines:
1. Central line: main entrance → administrative complex → memorial square → active sections → reserve grounds. 2. Northern line: columbarium → garden of remembrance → family plots → upper road. 3. Southern line: car park → main sections → workshop → service yard → service gate. 4. Underground line: administrative building basement → pumping station → technical corridor → storage chamber → central drainage collector.
